ROOT Symbols

1st Chakra Symbols

This four leafed lotus symbolizes the material world. It also refers to the north, south, east and west directions.

The animal connected to it is the elephant, Airavata. He is the king of the elephants who belonged to the earth god Indra. He is often depicted with seven trunks, that signify the seven minerals necessary for physical life. He also has a heavy black collar around his neck to remind us of his ties to earth. The elephant is the largest land mammal; he represents physical matter itself.

There is also a coiled snake within a latent energy which, when the seven chakras are operating fully, can awaken deep within us. This energy is known asKundalini. It's an energy with an intensity of power that most humans can't relate to; it can only be aroused and used under strict tuition and guidance.
